Sanctura XR Extended-Release Capsules

Generic Name: Trospium (TROSE-pee-um)Brand Name: Sanctura XR

Sanctura XR Extended-Release Capsules are used for:

Treating overactive bladder with symptoms such as urinary incontinence, urgency, and frequency.

Sanctura XR Extended-Release Capsules are an antispasmodic and antimuscarinic agent. It works by reducing muscle tone of the bladder, which decreases urinary spasm and frequency.

Do NOT use Sanctura XR Extended-Release Capsules if:

  • you are allergic to any ingredient in Sanctura XR Extended-Release Capsules
  • you have delayed or slow emptying of the stomach or uncontrolled narrow-angle glaucoma
  • you have severe kidney problems or trouble urinating

Contact your doctor or health care provider right away if any of these apply to you.

Before using Sanctura XR Extended-Release Capsules:

Some medical conditions may interact with Sanctura XR Extended-Release Capsules. Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following apply to you:

  • if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
  • if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement
  • if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances
  • if you use alcohol or have a history of alcohol abuse
  • if you have kidney problems or a blockage of your bladder or bowel
  • if you have liver problems, stomach or bowel problems (eg, inflammation, constipation), myasthenia gravis, increased pressure in the eye, or glaucoma

Some MEDICINES MAY INTERACT with Sanctura XR Extended-Release Capsules. Tell your health care provider if you are taking any other medicines, especially any of the following:

  • Oral solid dosage forms of potassium chloride because the risk of stomach or bowel irritation may be increased
  • Phenothiazines (eg, thioridazine) because their effectiveness may be decreased by Sanctura XR Extended-Release Capsules

This may not be a complete list of all interactions that may occur. Ask your health care provider if Sanctura XR Extended-Release Capsules may interact with other medicines that you take. Check with your health care provider before you start, stop, or change the dose of any medicine.

How to use Sanctura XR Extended-Release Capsules:

Use Sanctura XR Extended-Release Capsules as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.

  • An extra patient leaflet is available with Sanctura XR Extended-Release Capsules. Talk to your pharmacist if you have questions about this information.
  • Take Sanctura XR Extended-Release Capsules by mouth with water on an empty stomach at least 1 hour before eating, preferably in the morning or as directed by your doctor.
  • If you miss a dose of Sanctura XR Extended-Release Capsules, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.

Ask your health care provider any questions you may have about how to use Sanctura XR Extended-Release Capsules.

Important safety information:

  • Sanctura XR Extended-Release Capsules may cause drowsiness or blurred vision. These effects may be worse if you take it with alcohol or certain medicines. Use Sanctura XR Extended-Release Capsules with caution. Do not drive or perform other possibly unsafe tasks until you know how you react to it.
  • Do not drink alcohol within 2 hours before or after you take Sanctura XR Extended-Release Capsules.
  • Do not use medicines that may cause drowsiness (eg, sleep aids, muscle relaxers) while you are using Sanctura XR Extended-Release Capsules; it may add to their effects. Ask your pharmacist if you have questions about which medicines may cause drowsiness.
  • Sanctura XR Extended-Release Capsules may cause dry mouth. To relieve dry mouth, suck on sugarless hard candy or ice chips, chew sugarless gum, drink water, or use a saliva substitute.
  • Do not become overheated in hot weather or while you are being active; heatstroke may occur.
  • Tell your doctor or dentist that you take Sanctura XR Extended-Release Capsules before you receive any medical or dental care, emergency care, or surgery.
  • Use Sanctura XR Extended-Release Capsules with caution in the ELDERLY; they may be more sensitive to its effects, especially dry mouth, constipation, stomach pain or upset, and trouble urinating.
  • Sanctura XR Extended-Release Capsules should be used with extreme caution in CHILDREN; safety and effectiveness in children have not been confirmed.
  • PREGNANCY and BREAST-FEEDING: If you become pregnant, contact your doctor. You will need to discuss the benefits and risks of using Sanctura XR Extended-Release Capsules while you are pregnant. It is not known if Sanctura XR Extended-Release Capsules are found in breast milk. If you are or will be breast-feeding while you use Sanctura XR Extended-Release Capsules, check with your doctor. Discuss any possible risks to your baby.

Possible side effects of Sanctura XR Extended-Release Capsules:

All medicines may cause side effects, but many people have no, or minor, side effects. Check with your doctor if any of these most COMMON side effects persist or become bothersome:

Constipation; dry mouth or eyes; gas; nasal dryness; nausea; upset stomach.

Seek medical attention right away if any of these SEVERE side effects occur:

Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); chest pain; dark urine; difficulty urinating; fainting; fast or irregular heartbeat; hallucinations; mental or mood changes; muscle pain or weakness; red, swollen, peeling, or blistered skin; vision changes.

If OVERDOSE is suspected:

Contact 1-800-222-1222 (the American Association of Poison Control Centers), your local poison control center (http://www.aapcc.org), or emergency room immediately. Symptoms may include fast or irregular heartbeat.

Proper storage of Sanctura XR Extended-Release Capsules:

Store Sanctura XR Extended-Release Capsules at room temperature, between 68 and 77 degrees F (20 and 25 degrees C). Brief storage at temperatures between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 and 30 degrees C) is permitted. Store away from heat, moisture, and light. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep Sanctura XR Extended-Release Capsules out of the reach of children and away from pets.
