What is aliskiren?

Tekturna is used to treat high blood pressure. It may be used alone or in combination with other blood pressure-lowering medications.

What is the most important information I should know about aliskiren?

Tekturna is not for use during pregnancy. If you become pregnant while on aliskiren, stop taking Tekturna and call your doctor right away. Tekturna may harm an unborn baby, causing injury and even death.

You must take Tekturna regularly for it to be effective. Since blood pressure declines gradually, it may take a few weeks before you see the full benefit of aliskiren; continue to take it even if you are feeling well. Tekturna does not cure high blood pressure but instead works to keep it under control.

Who should not take aliskiren?

You should not take aliskiren if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding. Also, you should not take Tekturna if you are allergic to any of its ingredients.

What should I tell my doctor before I take the first dose of aliskiren?

Tell your doctor about all prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal medications you are taking before beginning treatment with Tekturna. Also, talk to your doctor about your complete medical history, especially if you are pregnant, plan on becoming pregnant, are breastfeeding, have kidney problems, or are allergic to any of the ingredients in Tekturna.

What is the usual dosage?

The information below is based on the dosage guidelines your doctor uses. Depending on your condition and medical history, your doctor may prescribe a different regimen. Do not change the dosage or stop taking your medication without your doctor's approval.

Adults: The usual starting dose is 150 milligrams (mg) taken once daily. Your doctor may increase the dose to 300 mg daily if your blood pressure is not adequately controlled on the lower dose.

How should I take aliskiren?

Take Tekturna once a day, at the same time each day. It can be taken with or without food.

What should I avoid while taking aliskiren?

Avoid becoming pregnant while on Tekturna.

What are possible food and drug interactions associated with aliskiren?

If Tekturna is taken with certain other drugs, the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. It is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Tekturna with the following: antifungal medications, cyclosporine, diuretics (water pills), furosemide, potassium-containing medicines, potassium supplements, or salt substitutes containing potassium.

What are the possible side effects of aliskiren?

Side effects cannot be anticipated. If any develop or change in intensity, tell your doctor as soon as possible. Only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking aliskiren.

Can I receive aliskiren if I am pregnant or breastfeeding?

You should not take aliskiren if you are pregnant. If you become pregnant while on aliskiren, inform your doctor as soon as possible. It is not known whether Tekturna passes into breast milk. There is potential for harm to the nursing infant, so your doctor will decide whether to discontinue nursing or whether to discontinue the medication.

What should I do if I miss a dose of aliskiren?

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is within 12 hours of your next dose, do not take the missed dose. Just take the next dose at your regular time. Do not take two doses at the same time to make up for a missed dose.
