Pygeum is an evergreen tree that grows in the mountains of central and southern Africa. Today pygeum is an endangered plant and efforts are being made to cultivate pygeum on plantations and control harvesting in the wild. The bark of the pygeum plant is used medicinally.
Pygeum is made from the bark or branches of an African plum tree. It is native of Africa but is most widely used in France and other European countries. It is most commonly known for its ability to relieve the symptoms of prostate cancer and benign prostate hyperplasia.
For most men, benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH) is a normal part of aging. Both BPH and prostate cancer can cause the prostate to grow larger. An enlarged prostate may cause men to have trouble starting or maintaining urination, need to urinate more often, have urine leaks, or need to urinate during the night. Due to the chemicals found in pygeum, triterpenes and n-docosanol, it has successfully reduced prostate enlargement. Triterpenes act as an anti-inflammatory and n-docosanol keeps cholesterol from building up in the prostate. Working together these compounds successfully reduce the enlargement of the prostate.Dosage and Administration
