Definition of «Hyperlipidemia»

Hyperlipidemia: High lipid (fat) levels in the blood. Lipids are transported in the blood as large molecules known as lipoproteins. There are 5 major families of lipids in the blood: chylomicrons, very low-density lipoproteins (VLDL), intermediate-density lipoproteins (IDL), low-density lipoproteins (LDL), and high-density lipoproteins (HDL). Hyperlipidemia is often defined by the particular type os lipoproteins that are elevated. For example, hypercholesterolemia is the term for high cholesterol levels in the blood, and hypertriglyceridemia refers to high triglyceride levels in the blood.

Hyperlipidemia is a risk factor for cardiovascular diseases, including coronary heart disease and peripheral vascular disease.
