Neomycin/Polymyxin/Lidocaine Cream

Neomycin/Polymyxin/Lidocaine Cream is used for:

Treating and preventing infection due to minor cuts, scrapes, and burns.

Neomycin/Polymyxin/Lidocaine Cream is an antibiotic and anesthetic combination. It works by killing sensitive bacteria on the skin or in wounds and by decreasing pain.

Do NOT use Neomycin/Polymyxin/Lidocaine Cream if:

  • you are allergic to any ingredient in Neomycin/Polymyxin/Lidocaine Cream
  • you are allergic to any other local anesthetics (eg, benzocaine)
  • there are signs of infection (eg, oozing, warmth, redness, swelling) or tissue damage in the affected area

Contact your doctor or health care provider right away if any of these apply to you.

Before using Neomycin/Polymyxin/Lidocaine Cream:

Some medical conditions may interact with Neomycin/Polymyxin/Lidocaine Cream. Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following apply to you:

  • if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
  • if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement
  • if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances
  • if you have had a severe allergic reaction (eg, severe rash, hives, difficulty breathing, dizziness) to any anesthetic medicine
  • if you have deep wounds, puncture wounds, animal bites, or serious burns
  • if you have heart, liver, or kidney problems

Some MEDICINES MAY INTERACT with Neomycin/Polymyxin/Lidocaine Cream. Tell your health care provider if you are taking any other medicines, especially any of the following:

  • Antiarrhythmics (eg, amiodarone, mexiletine), beta-blockers (eg, atenolol), or cimetidine because side effects, such as sluggishness, confusion, slow breathing, low blood pressure, or slow heartbeat, may occur

How to use Neomycin/Polymyxin/Lidocaine Cream:

Use Neomycin/Polymyxin/Lidocaine Cream as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.

  • Neomycin/Polymyxin/Lidocaine Cream is for external use only. Do not use in or near the eyes, nose, or mouth. If you get Neomycin/Polymyxin/Lidocaine Cream in your eyes, rinse immediately with cool tap water.
  • Do not apply Neomycin/Polymyxin/Lidocaine Cream over large areas of your body without first checking with your doctor.
  • Wash your hands thoroughly before and after using Neomycin/Polymyxin/Lidocaine Cream, unless your hands are part of the treated area.
  • Wash and completely dry the affected area. Apply a small amount of Neomycin/Polymyxin/Lidocaine Cream (about the size of the tip of the finger) to the affected area. Gently rub the medicine in until it is evenly distributed.
  • Do not bandage or wrap the affected area, unless directed otherwise by your doctor.
  • If your doctor recommended that you use Neomycin/Polymyxin/Lidocaine Cream for a certain period of time, it is important to use Neomycin/Polymyxin/Lidocaine Cream for the full course of treatment. Keep using it even if you feel better in a few days.
  • If you miss a dose of Neomycin/Polymyxin/Lidocaine Cream and you are using it regularly, use it as soon as possible. If several hours have passed or if it is nearing time for the next dose, do not double the dose to catch up, unless advised by your health care provider. Do not use 2 doses at once.

Important safety information:

  • If your symptoms do not get better within 1 week, if they clear up and then reappear, or if they get worse, check with your doctor.
  • The risk of side effects may be greater if you take Neomycin/Polymyxin/Lidocaine Cream in high doses or for a long time. Do NOT take more than the recommended dose or use for longer than 1 week without checking with your doctor.
  • Tell your doctor or dentist that you take Neomycin/Polymyxin/Lidocaine Cream before you receive any medical or dental care, emergency care, or surgery.
  • Neomycin/Polymyxin/Lidocaine Cream may cause a numbing effect at the application site. Do not scratch, rub, or expose the area to extreme hot or cold temperatures until the numbness is gone.
  • Neomycin/Polymyxin/Lidocaine Cream may cause harm if it is swallowed. If you may have taken it by mouth, contact your poison control center or emergency room right away.
  • Caution is advised when using Neomycin/Polymyxin/Lidocaine Cream in CHILDREN; they may be more sensitive to its effects. Be sure to apply Neomycin/Polymyxin/Lidocaine Cream only to the area you intend to treat.
  • Neomycin/Polymyxin/Lidocaine Cream should not be used in CHILDREN younger than 2 years old; safety and effectiveness in these children have not been confirmed.
  • PREGNANCY and BREAST-FEEDING: If you become pregnant, contact your doctor. You will need to discuss the benefits and risks of using Neomycin/Polymyxin/Lidocaine Cream while you are pregnant. It is not known if Neomycin/Polymyxin/Lidocaine Cream is found in breast milk. If you are or will be breast-feeding while you use Neomycin/Polymyxin/Lidocaine Cream, check with your doctor. Discuss any possible risks to your baby.

Possible side effects of Neomycin/Polymyxin/Lidocaine Cream:

All medicines may cause side effects, but many people have no, or minor, side effects. Check with your doctor if any of these most COMMON side effects persist or become bothersome:

Numbness at application site.

Seek medical attention right away if any of these SEVERE side effects occur:

Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); skin irritation, pain, burning, cracking, redness, swelling, or peeling not present before using Neomycin/Polymyxin/Lidocaine Cream; worsening or recurrence of wound symptoms.

Proper storage of Neomycin/Polymyxin/Lidocaine Cream:

Store Neomycin/Polymyxin/Lidocaine Cream at room temperature, between 68 and 77 degrees F (20 and 25 degrees C), in a tightly closed container. Store away from heat, moisture, and light. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep Neomycin/Polymyxin/Lidocaine Cream out of the reach of children and away from pets.
